Oh, stupid me! Of course that is the reason - to show how to survive in wilderness without the food, how to find it, what may be useful. That is why Jake was joking about sneaking the chocolate, a bit embarrassed. Probably he was told not to bring anything with him. Thank you jfaulkin for helping me realise that. ;D

I completely agree with you Jessica also the show is supposed to show survivor skills, so food is completely avoid, that's explain because Gyllenhaal was such gulty whiel heve showed to Grylls the chocolate inside the snow shelter ;D Man vs. Wild was fantastic, Jake was funny and very brave. He looked charming and hot. But... I don't understand why they didn't bring any food with them. Those huge backpacks were almost empty. Do you remember the scene when they packed the ice inside to make an anchor from it. Or when they put the jackets inside, crossing the river. It was really nothing inside except one pee bottle and one drink bottle, a knife, some small staff. It was very funny for me, cause we knew very well, being interested in Jake's life, that he spent only two days there. So they could take enough food and hot drinks for that time. I understand that it's a show and it looks interesting when they search for a food - like here they checked that sheep. When Jake descended to get it, probably it stank, so it was a nonsense to cut it in pieces. It was rotten, Jake could judge it from smell. But I can understand, it was fun for him. Bear wanted him to experience anything possible. ;D It was very cold, so the smell could be imperceptible, but I think Jake showed us, that it was not pleasant to smell. They could have, for example a small bag with food and lose it somehow to show us they have no food anymore and then look for some roots or worms. But anyway all the rest seemed very realistic and a fantastic adventure for a real man. I'm sure, Jake will never forget it, as he said. I have really enjoyed it a lot. Watched two times already. Second time I got much more from it. Thanks for sharing your review about the episode Mermon, about the food we've aready explained, about the goat i guess that Grylls truly had have intentions to make some food of it, as maybe he've thinked that goat died accidentally, so at least useful for food, i guess that Gyllenhaal cut it in peace the goat to drag it out the little gorge from her legs, and maybe Gyllenhaal had to carry the goat on his back, like butchers do and pushing upwards.... But when a legs of the goat ripped apart, than became impossible to do.... Definitely i enjoy the episode and Gyllenhaal very very much, he've tested himself barvely, a blast, i cannot became tired to repeat allway!

He's probably boned a few fish and chopped a few chickens in his day. What do you mean by chopping chickens -taking the carcass apart or chopping the head off a living chicken? About the fish: I used to work in a restaurant kitchen one summer (a student job) and one afternoon the apprentice and I had to 500 trouts! We were covered in fish guts from head to toe and I couldn't get rid of the fish smell for a week (at least I could still smell it). That must have been a pleasant experience compared to gutting a rotten sheep in a vulcanic hole. Yes, totally agree!

If I remember correctly, Bear told Jake to cut off the head and gut the sheep (leaving the "trash" in that hole, so to speak) and to put the rest of the sheep in the harness, so that they could eat the meat and use the fleece to sleep on it. I think Jake was trying to use the leg to drag the sheep toward the harness when it "fell" off on it's own. Because Bear asked "Did it come off all by itself?" (or something along those lines) and when Jake answered "Yes." Bear replied: "Then we cannot use it anymore."
I don't know why they didn't take the fleece anyway, probably it was too much trouble and work just for something warm to sleep on since they had quality gear on anyways.

You're right sasha...The goat was tooo far gone to be use...even the coat...it was just falling off everywhere.
As for Jake gutting the goat, I thought he said he had done something similar when camping....or I could have heard that wrong.
I know we all agree that he did a smashing job. ;D

I would've thought that Jake could've known the sheep was rotten b/c of the smell. That's so GROSS!

You are welcome Maria...As for the fleece I was thinking how messy it would be to gather and keep in one place...plus I sure it smell. I have seen shows where people will dumpster dive for food that grocery stores throw away and some people that will eat road kill...I guess you can eat the poor animal if it is not too far gone...Still gross.

Make food of some animals that you find kill it could be right just is the animals died accidentally, or isn't died from too long, i agree with on that Jessica. The fur/fleece surely stinked a lot, as goat or sheep, and long fur animals in general don't smell good even if them are in good health, i don't wish to think if are died since a while...

I have a hard time with people that pull over on the side of the road and pick up dead animals...I don't think it is very healthy....but I do know that in Alaska (just after a moose or dear is hit by a car) they will have someone butcher the animal and give it the the homeless shelters.

I extremely enjoyed this episode of "Man vs Wild" and my respect for Jake has gotten even greater than it already was, I admire him for all the things he did, especially the rope-thing, doing that is just amazing and very courageous, and in his situation even more so, having fear of hights! R E S P E C T! It was great to see that Jake and Bear did work so well together, they really get along with eachother I love Jake's courage, his sense of humour and his willingness to help (at one point he helped the camera crew) The thing with the sheep to me was a bit disgusting and I wouldn't eat a worm (well maybe, if I would be in a situation were there would not be anything else to eat and I would have to eat it in order to survive) The scene where they were digging a hole to spend the night was funny when Bear mentioned BM LOL And the scene where Jake confesses to Bear that he took some chocolate from the hotel, just before he left, was sweet and funny

I was watching a show about Alaska State troopers and when there was an accident with and animal they would wait for some one to come and get it. Nothing goes to waist.

I used to live in Alaska for a year and mooses get hit by cars pretty easily as they roam around the city all the time. They are not scared of people, not even cars. Once there was a moose on one of the main roads just taking a nap. The state troopers were trying to get it to move by shouting and making all kinds of noises, but it wouldn't move. They then used some sort of firework to scare it away, but all that happend was that some of the long hair on the back caught fire. The animal wasn't really hurt, but they had to tranquilise it to get it of the street. Took ages till one could use the road again.
And mooses are pretty big so I can see the point of not wasting it if it's totally fresh. But I have to admit I never heard of it back then. Which is not to say that it isn't true.
I guess fresh moose roast would have been much nicer for Jake than worms and rotten goats!
