I share the opinions of some but mostly those posted from Anita, wow this thread moving fast, seems that i was almost skipped... :DLOL I think that surely the location was scouted before filming the episode, and that of course the rope was securely fixed and checked and tested, and that the camera team have another way to get over the canyon, or simply some very special camera called "Giraffa" mostly used for GP froumla1, taht is able to filimg form big distance in HD resolution, and top to bottom... i still belive that nothing was planned, nor that Gyllenhaal done some training, he's surely a sporty guy, and a athlete, as i've stated several other times, but i guess that at that time, when the Source Code promotion runs, and this episode was filmed, he hadn't all that time to learning some survivor tecnique, or spent some days at GYM.Surely Gyllenhaal know what's to exected, why not, surely some arrangment had been taken, maybe i'm too naive but i don't think that all was disclosed to Gyllenhaal. Sure somehting was cutted in the view of the TV show, so not all that was filmed in the end was disclosed in the episode, but i do think that mainly we've seen all, i don't think that Gyllenhaal faking fear, nor that he've show calmly and coolness when he wasen't calm at all. To me the Rope scene was epic, and true, i think that surely the risk was high, but Gyllenhaal has estimated the situation very well, before acting. I didn't find nothing odd, or shocking in the peeing scene, as at least there's nothing really to be shocked about, the goat scene was much more hard to stand, but real indeed, the worst feeling is still about the worm scene....that's somehting i will never do.... Also i don't think that Grylls and Gyllenhaal chanced their salopettes-or at least Gyllenhaal weared saloppete- after dradged the river, but maybe i'm naive. ;D

Even if Bear had been on this route before, it was clear that the weather was more treacherous than usual. I also don't understand how either one could stay on that rope w/ the terrible wind gusts. Yeah, I'm sure that Jake's managers weren't happy when he decided to do this. I remember hearing about huge amounts of insurance taken out on Actors, also.
Did anyone else wonder how in the world Bear knew where they were going when they couldn't see anything at all. I didn't hear him mention a compass.

I wonder too Anita, but i guess that even without mentioned Grylls weared a compass, or simply was a set route, maybe there were some signals left along the way. About the rope usually the wind didn't blow always in canyons, sometimes there's wind and others there wasen't.... Good point about insurance, but i'm sure that Gyllenhaal cannot care less when he've taken agreement to be part of Grylls show, as i think he've ejoyed to tasting himslef, and push forward his boudaries....

I don't know about a compass but Bear stated that the wind blows in a cerntain dirction and as long as they follow it, they were heading in the right dirctions. I think he said that it blows in the south dirction in Iceland.
Well I can say is that Jake and Bear did a great job. No matter how much time they prepared or not....They were great.

Yes, Jessica, I remember that part too, about using the wind for navigation. Also he told Jake to look back every couple of feet or so to see if his foot prints were in a straight line. I don't think they had a compass with them.

Great point Jessica about wind, and definitely i agree with, i really don't mind about some details, i enjoy the episode and i think that was epic, and truly amazing, ditto, no matter if Grylles and Gyllenhaal prepared this longer before or not, it was great!!!

Thanks Jessica...I didn't catch the part about the wind. I do remember him turning around to see the tracks, but it looked like it was sleeting or snowing so bad that they would've been covered up.
Also, I almost got sick looking at the sheep carcass & imagining the smell. GROSS!!

I remember that Grylls tells something about walking in a specific direction to Gyllenhaal, but you know, it's always a bit hard understand all if isn't your mother language.... ;D Anita i totally share your opinion about the goat, surely the smell was terrible... Gyllenhaal really testing himself for been able to use the knife of the goat's carcass...but in a subtle way it's something real...

SUBTLE I could swear that I could almost smell it & had to turn away a couple of times when he gutted it...I love animals too much. Don't you think they would've said if they had brought food? I got the feeling that the chocolate was it except for the root & worms.

I was thinking about that too, Anita. I am not sure if they ate anything else. Sure, they didn't talk about it, but they were not seen drinking either (except in the cave) and I would expect they drank a lot during their walk, because they both know how important it is to stay hydrated. Maybe they ate a little when the camera was off, at least Jake never complained about being hungry. Jake doesn't seem to be a whiner anyway, because I sure as hell would have complained all the time. I tend to get whiny when I exhaust myself.

I got the feeling that the chocolate was it except for the root & worms. I had the same reaction, about the gutting. Jake did say it smelled like s*** down in that hole, which was surely an understatement. He did the cutting quickly and without hesitatation. That relates to his years of experience with food prep, I believe. He's probably boned a few fish and chopped a few chickens in his day. I liked hearing that Jake went camping a lot in his youth. Besides being super fit for this adventure with Grylls, Jake also seems to have knowledge and skill in the outdoors: he's athletic, he was a lifeguard on Martha's Vineyard, and now we know he camped too. It's good to see you posting again on IHJ, Anita.

I got the feeling that the chocolate was it except for the root & worms. Well i meant not that wasen't real just that surely isn't a nice scene, and was very very hard to stand, the sound of the goat's leg when it've breaked was terrible, i don't mind too much about the smell, as it don't really matter in my pov, as it was quite obvious that cannot smell like roses.... On first istance i think that the plan was to put out from the small canyon the goat to had some food, but once that one legs ripped out, carriyng out form there was almost impossible.... Surely the chocolate wasen't allowed, but Gyllenhaal carryed with him anyway, as he've said that he had something to confess.... that scene was sweet.<3

Surely Gyllenhaal handled the exploration with the right attitude, never complained and never loose his sense of humor, also he've sometiems enjoyed the wind of his face, in a scene he also took off his sky visors... I'm really impressed, Gyllenhaal was epic! ;D

Man vs. Wild was fantastic, Jake was funny and very brave. He looked charming and hot. But... I don't understand why they didn't bring any food with them. Those huge backpacks were almost empty. Do you remember the scene when they packed the ice inside to make an anchor from it. Or when they put the jackets inside, crossing the river. It was really nothing inside except one pee bottle and one drink bottle, a knife, some small staff. It was very funny for me, cause we knew very well, being interested in Jake's life, that he spent only two days there. So they could take enough food and hot drinks for that time. I understand that it's a show and it looks interesting when they search for a food - like here they checked that sheep. When Jake descended to get it, probably it stank, so it was a nonsense to cut it in pieces. It was rotten, Jake could judge it from smell. But I can understand, it was fun for him. Bear wanted him to experience anything possible. ;D It was very cold, so the smell could be imperceptible, but I think Jake showed us, that it was not pleasant to smell. They could have, for example a small bag with food and lose it somehow to show us they have no food anymore and then look for some roots or worms. But anyway all the rest seemed very realistic and a fantastic adventure for a real man. I'm sure, Jake will never forget it, as he said. I have really enjoyed it a lot. Watched two times already. Second time I got much more from it.

I seen a few show from the past and Bear doesn't take food with him...its to show an average person how to survive in difficult situatiions...If one was to take notes and just happened to be stranded in Iceland you could survive.
As for the food...I don't think they had any with them...maybe the crew....but they were only out for two days and the adrenaline might have covered the hunger pain.
