Thank you for the pictures! Jake looked good and donated $5000! That guy with Jake is Zach Iscol - Writer, Director, and Producer. What a generous gift from Jake! Thanks for the info, mermon, and for identifying the man in the pictures. I watched the video of Jake reading. It was a mind-blower for me: The poem he read is one of my lifetime favorite poems. I discovered it on my own in high school and have read it many times since. You probably know that it's about World War I, and that the poet, Wilfred Owen, was a soldier on the front who wanted to depict the real horrors of war. He was killed in the fighting just a week before the Armistice, so that makes his poetry even more poignant. Jake's reading was nearly perfect. Reading poems is not quite the same as playing a role--it's more like doing a voice-over in a film. I had a professor in college who took a special interest in how to read a poem out loud. One important rule is not to overdramatize. Jake got it right--the tone, the understanding of the text, the intensity and focus without theatrics, the clarity. I had a problem with the fact that he seemed to mispronounce the word "drowning" and that he rushed the final lines, where the poet makes his bitter, gut-wrenching point. Still, it was a moving experience for me, as I have never heard this poem read aloud (except when I tried it myself and was highly unsatisfied with the result).
