I finally saw JARHEAD for the first time yesterday evening. While I have to say that usually I don't like war movies I have to say I was pretty impressed by this one. Jake is absolutely awesome in this one. He can tell more of a story with just the blink of an eye than others with a thousand words. I got really terrified in the beginning when they tried to brand him. And almost every scene seems to stick out: when one of the guys gets shot during training cause he can't take the pressure. The famous Santa dance scene. Oh - yeah - and the "homework with my girlfriend" shot is nice too. The one where Jake has to clean the toilets. Knowing how short of a gag reflex he has in real life it's no wonder how believable he was in that one. Also I liked the scene where Jake and his fellow Marines reach the "Highway of Death". The set was done terrificly (I am into pathology and those burnt bodies sure looked real to me.) The movie's prop master sure did one hell of a job. And Jake had an incredible acting to it. The scenes at the burning oil fields where so claustrophobic to me. I had the feeling I myself am covered in oil and there was no way to get out. Besides that - Jake is so buffed in that movie. He seems to be nothing but muscle. And I like the haircut. Actually I kind of threw me off to see him with hair at the end of the movie. I totally understand why the military wants their guys to have haircuts like that: they look older and more mature. With hair Jake looked so vunerable and young standing at Troy's coffin. BTW - Peter Sarsgaard looks awesome in this one as well. While I think Jarhead is not a movie I will want to watch for entertainment, I will definately see it again.

its real and brings war very close to you. I thought it was very good how they showed that some of these man basically risked their life (the friendly fire scene) without ever really "being at war". Must be tough for those guys to just sit around and wait.

Thanks so much for posting this review Sasha, as i reapet allway i love this movie. Gyllenhaal is amazing and quite credible in his role, he play good the young soldier who don't what have to face, Gyllenhaal remind me a lot Gere in "Gentleman and officer" same ragility, sam intense way of acting, unsual approaccing to charater, don't why, but i see some connection, Sarsgaard is amazing too, stunning performance, the movie is about a war, based on a true story, so the screenplay is more and more intense then all the othre movie, for some parts it comes back from my memory Platoon, and Full Metal jacket, but it's more real. I love so far all war movie, and this one is one that i cannot miss, i still think that Gyllenhaal deserve oscar for this performance, and it's the movie i like most among all he've done. I love the walking on dirty sand scene, and the one with the horse that walking in the middle of the burning oil fields, as when i was younger a factory burned and it was only at 1/2 mile away form my city, the sky was exaclty the smae color, and the air was rauchy, we has yellow/brown fog for about 2 days...terrible so is quite real... The santa clause dance is funny and makes the idea of having fun among men. The naked scenes are few but not useless, as in all war movie there's scenes liek that. Definitely a great movie to see over and over again!

Thanks for sharing your wonderful review, MrsJakobGyllenhaal I like "Jarhead" very much too,* excellent* movie, with some stunning acting from Jake , and Peter Sarsgaard and Jamie Foxx are great too BM is my favourite movie with Jake, followed by "Jarhead" I so much second that! That's one of the reasons he's my all time favourite actor! I know there are a lot of other great actors around, but for me, Jake is without a doubt number 1! He's got something very unique about him, that -just my personal feeling- I don't see in any other actor. @maria: GRAZIE MOLTO for the beyond beautiful gift (avatar) I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT so much!!! THANKS AGAIN! Can't stop smiling

it was very well done. it must be hard to just wait when you know war is very close but you dont know whats going to happen next. That's what I thought too. My maid of honor's husband was in Kosovo while she was pregnant with their second child (they are american) and it is so hard on the family to have to live your regular life and not know if your beloved one ever comes back. I know that Kosovo is not the most dangerous place for a soldier to be - still you never know. I don't know how the women do it who's husband are really at war all over the place. But I can understand why the soldiers want to be where the "action" is - they trained for months or years just for this one thing, trying to be the best at it and then they don't ever get to use it. I found that scene with Peter very powerful where he snapes because they are not allowed to shoot.

Its always possible to die when one goes to these unstable areas...so must be hard! If my man or loved one went to war I think I could not think anything else than if he is ok so dont understand how people can handle it. That scene youre talking about is very powerful. It really shows their frustration perfectly. It also shows Peters acting skills---> really good

Can't stop smiling I guess Gyllenhaal act also thru feelings, i mean the emotions he've put in his charatcre while he's preforimgi and actin the role, caught the audience, so fare just few actor, like Russel Crowe, Daniel Craig, Timo Robbis are able to act just with a blink of an eye, agree also with Jakegirl about this point! OT:Do not thank me at all about the gif, it's was easy and a pleasure to do.

Well, as Maria suggested, we should move our discussion about Jarhead to the Jarhead thread!
We were talking about how Jarhead is more than a usual war movie, like Maria said
Jarhead is about the soldiers more than the war itself. How it changes their life in every level, and what it can do to a young man's head...
Well, feel free to share your thoughts!

Oh Deb thank you for moving my last sentence here, i guess that is one of the main reason why Jarhead is more than an usual war movie, you can see clearly the pain and sacrifice, the sense of confusion, even regression, that the war implies in human beings, then, is like if we did see how a soldier should act, but also as the man sublimely violence that surrounds him. As a man struggles to stay human, and not become Simply cynical, as the character of Fox, or just a checker, as is Swoff.
