I read on a german board the other day and they don't seem to be as enthusiastic about LAOD as the american fans do. A lot of the fans there said they feel like it's a movie with no story and the sex in it is only used to sell it to the audience because the storyline would be too weak otherwise. Some even think that Jake did that movie for money only and cannot understand why he would connect LAOD to BBM. They also claim that there has been too much promotion already since the movie will only start in January, another hint for some Gyllenhaalics that the movie ain't that good (good movies are successfull regardless of the amount of promotion - that's the opinion of Germans). I don't share their thoughts, but so far I have only seen american promo for LAOD and in most of those interviews Jake seems quite content with having done the movie. I even heard him say, he begged to get that role as the director didn't want to cast him. So maybe it really is the translation that makes funny dialogs sound wired. Just some thoughts on this post: 1) It's not a good idea to judge a film before it comes out, as some European fans are doing. Agreed: the film's promotion emphasizes the sex and nudity. This is done for a reason, which is to capitalize on the human inclination to look at people having sex, particularly naked people. But until one sees the film, it's not possible to know how good or bad it is, or at least how much one will personally like or dislike it, regardless of what the critics say. The intense promotion is to help the film find its footing against a sea of movies being released at the same time. The fact that a film is agressively promoted well in advance of release doesn't automatically mean it isn't any good. It means that there's a huge promo machine with lots of money supporting the film. 2) Movie trailers often give the wrong impression of a film. I have been disappointed in films that looked fantastic in the trailer, and been happily surprised by films that seemed to be one thing in the trailer and turned out to be completely different when seen as a whole. An example of this is the Ryan Gosling film Lars and the Real Girl. The trailer gave the impression it was a kinky comedy on the order of a Ben Stiller or Jack Black movie--totally off the wall. Instead, it's a touching and tender study of a fragile young man who can't face real relationships and thus invests himself in a made-up one with an inert doll. 3) Too much promotion works against the success of a film. The stars and director talk the thing to death long before it appears in theaters. They build up expectations and excitement that hardly any film can live up to. Audiences then tend to complain and start nitpicking because they didn't get blown out of their seats. 4) Jake is building a megawatt career. Careers consist of popular success (money) and respect for the talent (winning awards). No actor who takes his craft seriously wants to keep repeating the same type of role over and over. There's no challenge to it. Jake seems to be entering a phase of wanting to do less intensely heavy films. Assuming he enjoys the long and successful career he's headed for, he will have time to explore many roles. 5) When actors do promotion for a film, they are obliged to talk it up enthusiastically. It's part of their job, to whet the audience's appetite for a delightful film experience. What would be the point of speaking negatively? The costars may hate each other and there may have been bitterness on the set during filming, but in the end they all have to smile and encourage people to come see the finished product. Toward the close of PoP promotion I began to feel sorry for Jake, having to go over the same ground endlessly. When he started introducing new gimmicks to say the same thing, I thought he must be screaming inside with boredom to have to continually flog a film he'd finished making almost two years before.

Evie, I totally agree with you. That's why I write on an american board instead of a german one. Germans tend to totally envy succesfull people and they (as a people) cannot see it when someone actually enjoys their work and still has success. It's sad to see that even so called fans cannot be happy with Jake enjoying what he does. Why should he be doing films he's miserable with? I mean - that's his life for god's sake, right?
And I got the same impression you state in 5). Even as a fan where you only see tidbids of each interview (and only a small percentage of them really) you start to realise it's pretty much the same all over again after a while. Then again, even a star like Jake can't reinvent the wheel. One has to admire how Jake still tries to be thoughful with every person he talks to.

This movie was so good. I'm not saying that because I am a Jake fan, I am saying it as a movie goer. It really was a heart felt movie. I laughed and cried (oh I cried) but it was a lot better than I thought. The previews don't do justice. There's more story to it than I expected which was great. Jake was great in it. Other than Brokeback Mountain, my favorite performance to date. Anne was incredible too. She had me balling my eyes out and laughing to where I couldn't catch my breath. This is not your average romantic comedy. I wouldn't even call it that. I would call it a romantic drama.

movies90: thanks so much for your comment. It's always hard to not develop a opinion on a movie before you see it, when you see so much of it up front. It's good to hear that there is plenty to be discovered in theater as well!
