Maria - - He got mine praise ;D I agree with you about everything you said about Jake being Holden. He made this character very realistic and convincing, but also he made me like Holden quite much and feel very sorry for him. Too bad, that Holden didn't get any help. That he he had no chance to really grow up and straighten up his way of life. I feel very pleased that he had a possibility to create a child, hopefully with his beautiful face. If it's a son, of course. ;D

Oh good to know that you're sharing my thoughts about Holden, to be honest the most awufull thing is the indifference of Holden's parents, really shocking me, if someone give him help in the right way he wouln't wasted his life.

indifference - a new word for me. Exactly! They even could be a reason of his weirdness. Can you imagine a small kid among such a strange people. And he was very vulnerable, sensitive. It looked like he had no friends. When he was watching Justine with Bubba it must have been devastating for him.

I think that Holden didn't fulfill his parent's expetations, so both beacem indifernt to the need of their son, which is almost appalling, all that they do is sit and look elsewhere, maybe happy that he find a crappy job, agree that surely he have also some trouble in socializing, the storytelling shown also that in that city there wasen't all thi youth, and sense of loneliness is devastating, is the nothingness which devours Holden, which surrounds him, and eventually, after the break-up with justine, kill him.

Maria - - He got mine praise ;D I agree with you about everything you said about Jake being Holden Me too, after having seen all of Jake's "grown up" movies - I still think that Holden is his most impressive performance. As much as I like other movies of his, nothing ever made me feel as much as that.

I think that Holden, and Donnie are the most impressive and innovative performance of Gyllenhaal. I really really wish that he'll come back to drama, as he's very very skilled in portrayed unbalanced and troubled characters, in some way we can find some link in Jack Twist, a sort of "grown up" performance in his acting progress.

I agree, I said it somewhere here, that I like the most his serious roles. He's so good in them.

I just been disappointed when his characters aren't well directted that's sure, but he put always a lot of effort in portrayed his character, even Pilot, or Homer are amazing, in my pov, but Donnie is simply gorgeously creepy!

Teenage-Jake is really something special. I liked Pilot a lot and Donnie too, but Holden will forever be special to me for that feeling of fear and scare Jake was able to wake in me!

Sure Donnie is more spooki and scary, and this push you always away form him a little, like you're saying to yourself "This is not completely true" instead you get the fragility of Holden, his pain, it's different, he's more emotioanally into real life, his situations, well could be any teenager, so far i can recall even some small drama of some friends of my girlhood....

Sasha, do you still dislike Holden? Opposite to amanda and evie - I think Jennifer portrayed Justine very well. I think it's one of her best roles. She's good in drama and usually we see her in comedies only. IMO she showed well Justine confusion and mixed feelings. She was trapped in her life, without child, with a boring, drinking husband and his strange friend, Bubba. Her life was so empty and repetitive. Holden was like a light in her life, but then, wanted too much of her. She was not ready to change her life fully. Strangely, romance with Holden, pregnancy, refreshed her marriage, woke up her husband from some stagnancy. It's a chance, they'll be happier now. Amanda - I felt the same. I thought that life was so unfair to Holden. He had weird parents, maybe the reason he was weird too. Justine awoke some hopes in him, letting him to fall for her and then dumped him like unwanted shoe, even betrayed him, setting him up to the police. She was very egoistic, indeed. evie- Well said! She messed up and end up with pregnancy and husband forgiveness. And Holden died!

Well said Mermon, a good review of the characters :-) I shall watch the film again soon :-) PS may partner thought it was rubbish, but surprisingly he also disagrees with me about Jennifer's performance.
