Just purchased Proof on eBay - very much looking forward to watching this one I'm interested to hear what people's fave Jakey films are :-) ... Hope you enjoy this film. It has one of my favorite Jake performances, but I haven't seen it in a while. Proof was made in 2003, the year before Brokeback Mountain, but not released until 2005. You'll see a grown-up Jake who still has a boyish look and quality--a mix that really stirs me. Two years before Proof he did Moonlight Mile, another of my favorites, in which his youthful vibe is much stronger; in fact, though his performance is truly wonderful in that film, I've always thought he was too young for the role. Those two movies plus The Good Girl form a trilogy of films that I absolutely love and have watched many, many times.

Enjoyed Proof, but I do think that Jake's character Hal needed to be a little bit more substantial. I realise he was playing a student, and played it to perfection but Jake had so much more to offer even in those days. I'm so glad the film makers gradually woke up to his talent and charisma! :-)
I need to watch it again, as the narrative was hard to keep track of what with the 'time travel' :-) !

Yes, Amanda, one of the difficulties with Proof is the switching of the time sequences; I had to watch this film several times before I could follow what was happening. As for Jake's role: although Hal is the love interest and the catalyst for revealing the mathematical "secret," he is a supporting character. The story belongs to the lead character, Katherine (Gwynneth Paltrow), and the emphasis is on her. I have to say that while I generally like Gwynneth Paltrow a lot, I thought she was awful in this part--she made Katherine genuinely unappealing. Jake, on the other hand, made Hal very real and human to me, and a number of his scenes were quite strong. I love these especially: the opening sequence (his first appearance), the scene where he shows Katherine the book he found in her father's room, the bedroom scene, and the argument scene with the two sisters, where Katherine claims the work is hers. Jake blows me away as an actor because he plunges into each role with such total commitment--he's bold, he's passionate, he's intelligent, he's honest.

Hi Evie,
I totally agree with you. Both my partner and I thought Gwynneth was a little irritating. I agree with you about Jake throwing himself into the characters he plays :-) and everything you say about him.
The Good Girl landed on my doorstep this morning - can't wait to watch it :-)
I'm off to see Skyfall - the latest Bond film this evening! Hoping there will be an End of Watch trailer too, it's out in the UK on 23 Nov I think :-)

Proof is one of my favorites! Hal is not a student, but a teacher. I adore Jake in that role, so cute! I agree, he's not a main character here, that why I always wait for the parts he shows up, cause he adds some light to the scenes. I like funeral party - bedroom scene - unusual. And my favorite is a porch scene. Film is not easy, right, better to watch it more than once. I like Gwyneth here. She was pregnant at that time, feeling not too well. She admitted herself, she was not easy to her co-partners. I think, she played Katherine very well, showed her complex emotions brilliantly. Generally - great cast, just too little Hal/Jake for me. ;D Can't wait for you to share your thoughts on Good Girl, Amanda. It's also one of my favorites!

Proof is one of the only movies I really enjoyed Gwyneth in. I think it was her job to appear strange and make it hard for the audience to "like" her.
And Jake is so cute in that movie. The porch scene is my fav.
Hope you'll love "The Good Girl", Amanda. I had such a strong reaction to that movie, it's one of my fav Jake movies ever.

Hi Mrs Jake!
Yes, Ms Paltrow really comes across as 'unhinged', she played it well, but, yes hard to like her. I should know - I suffered a bout of serious depression 20 years ago which lasted about 3 years and steadily got worse until crunch point.
Mermon, you are right, I got confused and now realise Hal isn't a student, but as you say a teacher - which explains why he was in the house going through her father's notebooks. (Doh! I'm so thick!) It's just that Hal looks so young, and is younger that Catherine, by a year too....
What also amazes me is that Jarhead came out the same year as Proof. How different can two characters get? Jake is an awesome actor, no mistake... :-)

Hey Amanda, call me Sasha, everybody does and Mrs Jake is soo long (and as we know of today, not even correct anymore. *sigh)
EDIT: I changed my display name - I'm still the same, don't get confused. ;D END - EDIT
I love that about Jake, the way he plays so many different types convincingly.

Jake is an awesome actor, no mistake... :-) It's odd how things work in the movie business. Jake had three films open in the fall/early winter of 2005. Proof debuted in September, but was filmed in 2003; Jarhead opened in late October and was filmed in late 2004/early 2005, after Brokeback Mountain; and BBM, opening in late November, was filmed in the summer of 2004. I agree: the three films display Jake's wonderful range. Gwynneth Paltrow is about 8 years older than Jake; in 2003 he was 22. My question throughout the movie is: What in the world does Hal see in her? She's so ungracious to him, so uninviting. I have great sympathy and understanding for someone in Katherine's position. I have myself been a caregiver for someone as compromised as her father, for about the same amount of time. The stress does make you short-tempered and weary and joyless, but the person you are is still there underneath. I never saw the good, real person in Katherine, and I have to think it was because Paltrow failed to show her.

Sasha - So this is the reason you changed your name? LOL! Maybe you're right. ;D Amanda - - though, it means he must be very talented in maths, becoming a teacher that early! Or he got fine genes, making him look younger. LOL I said it already before, I'll repeat it again - I'd love to have such a hot, cool maths' teacher. How I would love to study then! ;D The truth is that there were 3 movies that year, like evie pointed. Let's don't forget about the most beautiful movie in the world - Brokeback Mountain! Yes, Jake is very talented and dedicated to his roles. Hal, Swoff, Jack Twist - they are such a different characters! evie - Hm, I so disagree with it, with all the respect to your opinion. I just see her differently, as Hal did. ;D He was teaching many young women, probably typical. I bet they adored him as a young, handsome teacher. Katherine was different. First of all, she was a daughter of admired by him professor, he had an eye for her since many years ago. Then she was more mature, intriguing, a bit lost, somehow withdrawn. I can see, why Hal fall for her. She was also wise. From my point of view, Gwyneth portrayed her very well. K. was short-tempered? Yes, when he cheated on her(backpack with ex.book), didn't believe/support her, when discovered her work. She was hurt, had right to feel bitter and mad, with all that confusion about herself, she had in her head. That's some issue with her, people like her or not. I do, more like an actress, characters she plays, than as a real life person, but she is a good actress IMO. The clash/impact between Katherine and Hal's different characters was very powerful for me. He was so joyful (contaminating with joy), self-confindent and open, and she was as I described earlier. I guess, he could be intrigued by her and I suppose she was by him, he helped her to open up, to believe in herself. I like the combination of two of them. But I know I am in minority, thinking that way.
