Hey guys, I'd appreciate anyone who could offer some advice/consolation despite the length of this post So my mom and I went to NY this past weekend to see Jake in the play. First off, the play was AMAZING, and so was Jake (as usual). There came a point that we were just so engrossed in his character, that we forget that it's really him, he's that good! I'm so glad to have seen it! BUT this is where the title comes in. The play gets out, and people are leaving the theatre. I'm pretty much storming out of there ahead of my mom to get a good spot outside the theatre for a pic with Jake, which I was looking forward to ever since we booked tickets. The first actor, Annie's father, came out and he signed my playbill. Then later, Annie came out and she was so sweet, and she signed my playbill. Half hour later, we're all still waiting for Jake, and we're just standing there at 10 at night shivering. Then someone who works at the theatre came out saying "all the actors have left." It was so devastating, and we didn't believe him. We figured he'd said that to get rid of the crowd. So while everyone's leaving, my mom and I stay, and asked if he was absolutely sure that Jake was gone. He said that that's what he was told. But then a nicer worker came out, and we asked him about it, and he said "yea, if I'm just getting out then everyone's gone" I'm so shocked and POed at the same time, all I wanted was to just go home. But then he says "I'm pretty close to Jake, if you give me a forwarding address maybe I can get you an autograph" But I was just so mad and tired that I didn't give it to him, which I wish I did. I've just been brooding about it so much, why THIS weekend, the one time we come to NY, that he couldn't come out after the play?! Don't get me wrong, it could've been worse- he could've not have performed at all. I'm debating getting another ticket to fly to NY just for a day to stand outside the theatre after the matinee and/or evening showing to get a picture. But it would come out to $200 round trip, and I'd have to convince my sister or someone to come along. But then, I'm thinking of calling the main office of the theatre tomorrow and telling them my story, and hopefully if I give them my address and that they could mail me an autograph. I just don't know what to do. I'm just so bummed out. Do I fly out to NY for a picture? Would it be a waste of money? Do I call the office tomorrow (it was closed today because of Columbus Day) and tell them my story, and hopefully I can at least get something out of it? Do I just try to get over it? Any advice is appreciated. I'm just so disappointed, I don't know what I want to do at this point.

So sorry that you didnt get to see Jake did you go to the matinee show? He comes out most of the time to sign maybe he had to be somewhere and couldnt stey after the show.Glad you liked the play Regarding advice about going out again to see the play and trying to see Jake unfortunely its a game of chance whether Jake will come out if you went to the matinee show I think he more than likely comes out after the evening show.

Oh, Lauren, I feel your pain! What a disappointment, after waiting so long and making such an effort, not to see Jake and take a picture with him.
On the plus side, you saw the play, and you are totally right: he was amazing, and yes, he gets so into the character that you forget it's Jake. I saw him at a preview performance in September. My greatest fear had been that he wouldn't be performing the day I went. But he was there, in all his hotness and glory, and I was happy. I'll see him again at the end of October, and maybe even one more time before the play closes. This is an expensive proposition for me, but at least I don't have to buy a plane ticket to get to the show.
Which is why I would suggest you not fly to New York again, unless you have money to burn. If you want an autograph, there are two ways you could try for it: 1) call the box office, explain your distress (cry if you can manage it), and ask whether you could get an autographed program--they will tell you whether it's possible to have that sent to you; or 2) write a letter directly to Jake in care of the theater, describe your heartbreak, and ask for an autographed program--and include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for him (or his helper) to use when sending that to you. Obviously, these moves still will not get you a picture of yourself with Jake. If that's your main goal, then you would have to fly to New York and hang out at the stage door in hopes of catching Jake. And you'd also have to hope he'd be in a cooperative enough mood to stop and pose with you.
I myself looked for Jake after the performance but couldn't even see where the stage door was. Michelle Gomez (the mother in the play) was out on 46th Street talking to some people, but she's the only one I saw. Stars may or may not sign autographs for fans at the stage door, and they don't typically pose for pictures then (though I saw the cast of Jersey Boys do this). Jake must have slipped out through another exit. Maybe he was tired or not feeling well that night, or had somewhere to rush off to. He has the reputation of being very friendly and accommodating to his fans, laughing and joking with them. But he's human after all, and I suppose that sometimes he just isn't up for the attention and the extra effort.

Thanks evie and book for your replies. We went to the evening show that day. I just called the theatre's main office, and was transferred over to the company manger. I left her a voicemail explaining my situation and asking if it was possible if I could get an autograph mailed to me, so hopefully she'll get back to me sometime today. If my sister and I did fly out to NY, it would literally just be a day trip. I'm looking at airplane tickets for Saturday, November 10, and the arrival would be at 10:49 a.m, and then the only flight available that we could take home would leave at 10:45 at night, so we'd have 2 chances of meeting Jake (unless we'd have to leave earlier to catch our flight after the evening show). The cost would be $182.60 alone for tickets, so I probably wouldn't get a ticket to see the play again. I can work over my winter break from college to make up for the money spent in NY, and this job pays pretty well (I worked there over the past few summers and made $200/week). And even after NY, I'd still have a few hundred left in my savings. I know it's an irrational decision, but now I'm erring on the side of going to NY again. Not just to see Jake, but also to spend some more time in the city! However, this past weekend was an early b-day gift for me, so I don't want to offend my mom for paying for our trip. I'll wait and see what the theater company manager has to say before I go asking my sister if she would wanna accompany me to NY. Thanks again for replying, I appreciate it!

I can understand your pain, Lauren. Mermon and I have a friend who went to to NY as well and waited in line for Jake's autograph, but when it was her turn a 6 foot guy jumped in front of her and blocked her. He took his sweet time chatting with Jake and taking a pic. Then he also asked for an autograph although he hadn't even brought a pen. Jake asked our friend if he could borrow her pen, signed the guys stuff, gave her pen back and rushed off.
She was devastated as well.
Her hubby took her to NY again two weeks later, this time just to wait in line and she did get her autograph and she is quite happy now.
I can't tell you what to do either but I think it's reasonable to wait for the manager to get back to you. After all the play is running for another couple of weeks. You have time till November to make a decision.
I think Jake must have had a good reason to not sign that day, because there are a lot of videos where he takes his time with the fans. On twitter I chatted with a girl who came to NY to see Jake and during one weekend she got 3 pictures with Jake, every time she went to the stage door. So it's really a bit of luck and a bit of persistence to get what you want.
I hope you find a way to get what you want. It probably won't be any consolidation to you, but I would give a lot to see Jake on stage, but I really can't afford it, so IMO you already have a lot to cherish!

MrsJakobGyllenhaal- thanks for your reply . I can't believe someone would be so rude to do that to your friend! Anyway, I didn't hear back from the company manager on Tuesday at all, so I called again yesterday. The woman working at the theatre's main office redirected me to another manager (the one I left a message for on Tuesday was a woman, and this manager was a guy). He was really nice and seemed to understand how I felt, and he agreed to mail me a signed playbill from Jake after I gave him my address . He said that Jake's really nice to his fans, so he wouldn't mind doing it. Still, I may ask my sister today if she would want to go to NY with me that Saturday. MrsJG, just like your friend did, I would just wait in line outside the theater once the play got out. I know I should be happy that I at least convinced the manager to get me an autograph, but I just feel like this is my only opportunity to see Jake close up! And what else would I spend money on if I didn't go to NY, besides clothes and material things? I don't know, this would be so much easier if he'd just come out after my mom and I had seen the play.

I'm sorry laurenakajakefan, that you didn't have a chance to see Jake after the play. Though, like Sasha said, he must have had some reason, I would be mad and disappointed. But if you have any chance, go to NYC again. Even if you'll get an autograph, it's not the same as seeing Jake in person and from the close distance. I would go on your place! For me, autograph wouldn't be as much important as a picture with him! And seeing him in person, smiling, talking, smoking, whatever. Good luck and let us know!

Hey guys! So after some deliberation, it turns out that flying to NY in hopes of seeing Jake outside the theatre is just not a reasonable (nor affordable) option. I honestly would go if I had the time and money for it, but alas I'm a college student. BUTMy family came to visit me this past weekend and they brought an envelope that the Roundabout Theater sent to my house! ;D I'm friggin ECSTATIC!! It may not be a picture with him, but WOW! I'm so glad that I got in touch with the company manager and that Jake actually took the time to sign a playbill for me! It just shows how gracious he really is to his fans Definitely gonna send a nice thank you note to the company! Thanks everyone for replying!

Lauren, I'm so GLAD for you, that you got such a wonderful gift after all your efforts. It's a shame about the money and the plane trip, but you did make the best of the situation and got rewarded for it! Here's my suggestion: By all means send a thank-you to the company, but also send a separate note to Jake AND INCLUDE YOUR PICTURE. You're so pretty, he's bound to appreciate your looks as well as your devotion, and feel good about himself for having pleased such a lovely young lady.

That's so sweet! I do feel for you though, that you never met Jake in person.
I went all the way to New York to see a friend who was an actor (passed away now) called Sully Boyar - he was good friends with Al Pacino who I was a HUGE fan of (and still am!). One morning I had to meet Sully at Al's apartment and sat out in the foyer waiting for Sully to come down as he'd spent the night playing poker with Al - I was too scared and shy to ask if I could meet Al, so I never did get to meet him, what an ass I was!!! It is the biggest regret of my life to be honest!

I forgot to add, that Sully did bring down a signed photo of Al with my name on too, so that was a bonus - it's on my bathroom wall :-)
