I found a sweet interview with one of the girls playing Tommy's niece - Bailee Madison. She behave like an adult , being sweet kid at the same time. She's amazing. And says some nice things about Jake at the end. Jake with two movie nieces.

Thank you for sharing this! wow, she really talks and behaves like an adult, watching the movie I thought she might actually be like that, like a really grown up kid. I loved her acting in the movie... well, everyone did great actually. By the way, did she say "when I was a kid"? she's very cute and sweet

I only got to watch this video right now. Incredible how "old" this girl sounds, I don't think that's healthy for her. I realise that she knows probably more than most girls her age just from being on flim sets that much and around grown ups, but it's somehow freaky. Again, I'm glad that Naomi and Steven let Jake have a "real" childhood.

Her filmography is impressive. It's like 19 movies, and she's around 11 years old! But for me, even if she behaves like an adult, she's somehow sweet and childish. You should see her in the Brothers, Sasha. She's brilliant! And her relationship with Jake is awesome. Touching scene on the bridge.

Just one scene is very scary. I was actually quite shocked watching that. But I didn't know what to expect. You are warned.

The rental DVD is out! And I watched it yesterday.
First things first: Jake is great in that movie. I liked everything about him: his performance (the scene where he waves at Grace when she thanks him for the B-day surprise, like he is saying "It's nothing." or the scene at the family tabel when he's first out: he laughes at the kids in such a cute way) and his look (I'm tempted to say that I like the Tommy-look even more than the Jamie-look and that's got to tell you something). The tatoos, the clothes he wears, hell even the smocking looks hot when he does it. Maybe it's that bit of a bad boy image he has at the beginning that draws me in. I really wanna see him play a bad guy now!
And Bailee Madison - OMG. That must have been some of the most impressing child acting I have ever seen. When she has her outbreak during her sisters B-day tears were running down my cheeks. But as a mother it was so hard to watch, knowing she just "pretended", I don't know if I could have watched my baby go through this emotions, even just for pretend. She should have been nominated for something for that!
Other than that I think the movie is not as good as it could have been. The characters (even Tommy) are very stereotypical, very american. I think they didn't get a chance to explore every emotion they went through as deeply as they could have. Natalie Portman may not be the greatest actress on this planet, but to me she was okay. Tobey Maguire bothered me a whole lot more. Yesterday I couldn't tell why but after a nights sleep I now know. I didn't believe that he was really bothered by killing Joseph. It felt more like a nurse wipping off some patient behind - not something you enjoy, but part of the job. I think, he only threw the pipe away the first time because there was a camera watching. I didn't believe that he even considered for a second to give his life instead. He clearly wanted to get home and that was all he cared for. Therefore I didn't get the griving soldier image once he was back home, more the jealous boy: he used to be his dad's hero, now his brother is actually the one achiving things. He was the one everybody looked up to, now his kids rather be with uncle Tommy. Even when he told Grace that he had killed Joseph, it felt more like he said it to make her feel bad and not dare to leave him for Tommy.
I know that's not what Jim Sheridan intended when he shot those scenes, but that's the feeling I get.
Still I liked the movie in general and I will get the DVD once it's sold.

Thanks so much for sharing your review here Sasha. I agree in some point with your review, in someway as i've seen several Sheridan movies, he tends to stereotypied a bit the charaters, i find that Tommy isin't completely a stereotype but i could agree with you that in a wider way he is. I find that director didn't curve too much in emotions, and as this is a remake the charater lost a bit of their originality, the background the reasons why acting in this or that way are a bit erased. I find that at least the movie could be a blast with some different director choices, still i find that Gyllenhaal is amazing playing Tommy, maybe a bit more of his life could changed a bit the mood of the audience towards the whole movie. Maguire isin't completely off from his character, but surely a bit too dramatic, the most annoying thing is Portman, she portrayed her character as nothing that could be, even if she's rated as a great actress to me, among with the director's cut, is the main reason why this movie is good but not excellent.

For me that movie is not excellent, but very good. That's my opinion after watching it 3 times already. After first time I was mainly moved by this war's plot. But next times, rewinding THAT scene, I was focusing on everything else. As usual it was to little of Jake. I would like to see him in some love scenes. Never enough! ;D
Sasha - - for me the characters were very deep. All of them - Isabelle - what this girl was going through! She was missing her dad, but when he finally came back, he was a stranger. So she preferred her uncle instead, but even in her little brain, she knew this was not right. She always felt loved less than her younger sister. Grace - lived her life, always missing Sam, being somewhere far away. She knew he loved her, but army was important for him as well. Then she lost him forever, grieving him, than he came back unexpectedly, not the same, completely different and instead of joy she got some nightmare. Tommy helped her recover a bit, she was on a good way of feeling more in peace, then when Sam came back he ruined that, bringing again confusion and worries. Tommy, always in a shadow of a "better" brother, was not even able to dislike him. In the matter of fact he loved him very much and admired him, despite wrong, injustice treatment by his father. He suffered a lot after his death, feeling, that being worst, maybe he should died instead of Sam. Missing him terribly, he got very close as probably never before, with his daughters, especially Isabelle, who seemed so similar to him in many ways. And with Grace, Sam's wife. She didn't like him even, too much, but their obvious love for Sam brought them together. He started to feel he has a kind of a place in his life, when Sam came back. Tommy was so happy about that, even if he felt, that somehow he lost something, he had lately. But then Sam started to behave irrationally, causing Tommy's pain and a need to help him. The last scene between brothers was so moving. I won't even mention Sam's character. His suffering and deepness of character is so obvious. father as well was devastating by Sam's lost and then he was not able to help him, when he came back. So adding that all - IMO - that movie was not stereotypical. They all had survived some tragedy. I didn't see the original movie, I know from some discussion it was really good and deep. American version moved me. I think that most of the young soldiers coming back from war's places has to deal with some serious problems and their families too. I think I like Brothers more after second and third watching.
As always I value our differences in points of view, giving us the chance to discuss things.
